De-colonial Surf-Her*story (lecture)

Surfing has long been told out of a white, male, heterosexual perspective, but there’s plenty of other water stories to be heard claiming their rightful place in the world of this sport.

This lecture dives deep into the various roots of surfing around the world (spoiler alert: it’s not just Hawai’i!). This look into the past is also putting a spot light to it’s darker side of the story, namely colonialism and later new forms of power relations coming in the form of an exploitive surf tourism and cultural appropriation.

But the real focus is on the powerful female, queer and trans surfers, who have shaped the sport and surf culture as we know it today. Their impact is often overlooked, but we will highlight their contributions and discuss how they’ve helped transform surfing into a more inclusive, diverse and empowering space for all.

The duration of the lecture is around 2 hours and can be combined with a film screening relating to the topic.

Looking good! – Photo / Video – Analysis (workshop)

Self-perception vs. reality can be a tricky thing – maybe you feel like you pulled off a perfect barrel like Tyler Wright or gracefully danced across the longboard like Sasha Jane Lowerson. But did you really? In our photo and video analysis workshop, we look truth in the face – which can go one way or the other in terms of overlapping with self -perception.

This method is one of the most effective ways to improve your surfing. By closely analyzing your footage and breaking it down into details, we identify what you’re already doing well and where there’s still room for improvement. This can relate to positioning in the line-up, paddle technique, pop-up, prone position, stance, or wave selection.
