Do you wonder what Surfing and Jiujitsu have in common and why they complement each other so well? Not only Kelly Slater and Joel Tudor believe in it, but also we find it excellent to bring your surf game to the next level!

JiuJitsu goes back to a weaponless self-defense form and literally translated means ‘The gentle technique / The yielding art’. There are many techniques that can be executed by lighter or physically weaker people on significantly heavier / physically superior people.

JiuJitsu is often referred to as chess with the body: as the technical knowledge of both sparring partners increases, the match becomes more and more a game of tactics, anticipating moves, setting traps, and reading the partner and staying one step ahead of their game. So the mind is challenged as much as the body and for many this game means getting into a state of flow and being fully in the here and now.

Many people are also familiar with this state from surfing, where we have to focus completely on the ocean, the waves and our own bodies. This is one of the reasons why JiuJitsu and surfing are a great combination! In addition, balance, awareness of one’s own center of gravity, sensorimotor skills and, of course, strength and dexterity are trained and developed in both. All this makes both perfectly complementary and mutually enriching sport.
